“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light”
Ephesians 5:8
In John 9:4-5, Jesus said “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.“
So, what does it mean for believers to be light and walk as children of light?
According to Ephesians 5:9, being light simply involves working the works of Jesus, the Light, in the fruit of the Spirit – it says “for the fruit of the Spirit (Light) is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.”
Galatians 5:22, 25 says “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, and self-control“; v.25 “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
So then, the instruction of the Apostle Paul to believers to “walk in the light“, is also a direction to cultivate a lifestyle based on increasing in the fruit of the Spirit. To truly be walking in the light, one must be walking and growing in the fruit of the Spirit.
In John 15:8, Jesus said “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” To be a disciple means to be a follower of Christ. If Christ worked the works of God as the Light, we as His disciples are to do the same (Ephesians 5:8-14).
“Awake, you who sleep,
Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light.”
Ephesians 5:14
